Cakes I Made Since Moving to Bangkok

This is my first fondant cake made since I moved to Bangkok. I am still undecided on whether I should continue the Pink Ellies business here but I do miss my old hectic days of trying to meet a cake dateline. Am still getting used to the kitchen here but it definitely can't compare to the beautiful kitchen my husband gave me at my house in Malaysia. I do miss the space and size complete with the amenities of my kitchen back home. My kitchen here is not really equipped for cake modelling or decorating. Despite having to adjust to my new surroundings and situation, I still managed to make this cake for a friend in celebration of his 34th birthday. Not one of my best efforts but it will have to do for the occasion. The cake is chocolate with peanut buttercream filling coated with dark Belgian chocolate ganache.

I chose a very light blue for the base colour

The present box is stencilled with a vine motif and I've added a lily design on the box

The next cake is my first cake order since I moved to Bangkok last August. This order was by Didi, who works for the Malaysian Embassy in Bangkok. Her daughter, Nadine turned 3 last October and Nadine wanted a princess cake in pink! Didi also wanted a buttercream cake. Since I wasn't able to attend Nadine's birthday party, I bought the Barbie princess doll as a birthday gift and made her skirt with rich chocolate cake decorated with swirls of sinful vanilla buttercream. I then airbrushed the icing in gradual pink to create an ombre effect. All in all, I was quite pleased with how the cake turned out. Didi and Nadine loved the cake!

I made little rosette swirls as part of the princess' skirt and added little fondant flowers in white to enhance the 3D effect

The bottom of the skirt is made with gum paste to have the petticoat effect

The skirt is then airbrushed to create the different shades of pink or the "ombre' effect
The next cake was ordered by my neighbour, Niqman  as a surprise for his wife's birthday. He wanted a Chanel handbag in blue. He actually forwarded the handbag photo to me but somehow or rather I couldn't find the actual colour from the web. So, I decided to follow this colour, which was one of the designs on the web. The cake eventually became a gift from me and Bahrin as Niqman and Eliza have been one of our dearest friends since we moved to Bangkok. The cake was a rich chocolate cake with a tinge of coffee and the cake was covered in rich coffee laced chocolate ganache. We had a great time celebrating Eliza's birthday last month and I wish her many, many more blessed years to come.

I added some gold beads to the cake and dusted the base with a shimmery pearl dust
I also made another cake in October 2014 for my daughter, Hannah's 10th birthday. I have decided to write a separate post on the treats I did for Hannah and her classmates. Until then, thanks for reading my post!

"Ariana's 8th"

I haven't made any blog entry in the last three weeks. This is due to the last hectic days leading to Eid Mubarak and consequently the celebration with family and friends in the last two weeks. I did manage however, to make a birthday cake for Ariana's 8th birthday. Ariana is my daughter's friend from school and she insisted from her mum a mini birthday party for her during Ramadhan. Thus, I was commissioned to make for her a 2-tiered cake with a girl and a cat on the cake.

It took me the whole night to complete this cake as I started the make the cake after break fasting. It was a fairly simple cake to make but I wanted the cake to be perfect. I was quite happy that the cake turned out the way I wanted it to be and most of all, birthday girl, Ariana was very happy with the cake. The bottom tier of the cake was chocolate and top tier was butter vanilla.

Happy Birthday, dear Ariana and thank you, Shima for the cake order... I look forward to more future orders from you: ) I would also like to take this opportunity to wish my fellow Muslim readers, Selamat Hari Raya or Happy Eid Mubarak to all of you... May the coming year bring us greater peace and harmony...

"Princess Cake"

Melissa celebrated her 4th birthday on 31st October 2012. To celebrate the occasion, her mom, Marhaini wanted a princess cake for her little princess. She wanted me to make for her a cake that has the upper body of a real doll but the full skirt is made of cake. I decided to not use a doll but instead wanted to make the body from sugarpaste or fondant. It was a simple but a very sweet cake. My daughter, Hannah was green with envy when she saw me making this cake. She questioned why didn't I make for her a birthday cake like this one. She forgot that she herself chose the theme for her birthday cuppies!!! LOL... She also remembered her 4th birthday cake, which was a princess cake but had a doll body!! It was quite funny but I didn't think Hannah thought it was amusing!!  I had to pacify her and told her that I will make for her a princess cake next time!

Back to my cake, Marhaini wanted a chocolate cake and the theme colour she chose was purple and pink. It took a while for the doll to harden as its the raining season and rain and fondant are not the best of friends!! All this humidity caused the fondant on my cake to be quite soft and a simple cake became not so simple after all because of the weather. I decided to make the princess' hair blond and the tiara red. This cake is actually my fictional princess!!!

So, this was how my princess looked like. I dusted the dress with lustre dust to get the shimmer look. The eyes was a bit smudged! My hands were not so steady that day and the colour just keeps on smudging the eyes... My princess now has the smokey look...Hehehe...

According to Marhaini, Melissa was so thrilled with the cake. This was her testimonial from FB: "Not only did the cake look good , it tasted absolutely divine. Thanks Pink Ellies Novelty Cakes!! My eldest daughter is already planning what cake she wants on her 16th birthday! "

Thanks so much for the order, Marhaini. I hope to hear from you soon!!

"Hannah's Birthday Cuppies"

My daughter Hannah, who just celebrated her 8th birthday, wanted to bring some cupcakes to school to celebrate with her friends. She has been pestering me for months already and she wanted the theme to be all girly stuff. Among the stuff that she requested I put on the cupcakes were handbag, shoes, dress, tiara and a wand. So, its a mix of a princess theme and a modern girl theme. I chose her theme colour to be pink and black but since purple is Hannah's fave colour, she insisted that the dress should be in purple!! Oh no, I thought, colour clash!!!! But since its her birthday, I just went with her request!

The cupcake wrappers and candy goody box stickers were bought online. I don't quite like the sizing for the wrappers as its quite high and doesn't fit my cupcake casings that well. Note to self, never buy from this vendor again!!! I tried to still make it look nice for Hannah. So, instead of making the deco from buttercream icing only, I made them from gumpaste. The cupcakes were french vanilla flavoured and the buttercream was just plain old vanilla icing.

The vanilla cupcakes in pink icing with the decorated sugar pieces and of course, the purple dress!!

The mini handbag, tiara, wand and heels as requested by my little boss, Hannah...
At the last minute, I decided to give Hannah's classmates candies to go with the cupcakes. I packed the chocolates in a small plastic box and tied a ribbon in pink or black to go with the theme.

Hannah told me that she had a great time celebrating her birthday in school. She also told me that I'm the best mom in the world!! Well, I guess every child thinks of their mom that way, but nevertheless, I was so touched and happy that I made her so happy!! Happy Birthday again my baby girl, Hannah. Love you always, baby....
