"Ducati"

Last week, I had a last minute cake order from one of my friend's niece. She wanted a simple 2D cake with the Ducati motorbike on the cake as the main deco.

There's really nothing much to blog about this cake as the process was fairly quite smooth and I managed to complete this cake in just a few hours. The cake is all chocolate with dark chocolate ganache filling and frosting.

The cake up-close. The base was airbrushed in primary red and top-up in red sheen

The black Ducati... At least my interpretation of it...

I hope you had a great birthday celebration with your friends, Faten. Thanks for the order :)

"Dinosaurs"

Eliena wanted a dinosaur themed cake for her son, Zack's 4th birthday celebration. It was quite a challenge for me but hey, I decided, why not. So, I accepted the order and started making my dinosaurs a few days before I had the cake baked.

This cake theme was a tough one to make. The cake is easy but the sugar dinosaurs, not so! I spent many hours trying to make the dinosaurs stand but didn't succeed. The weather was just not helping and the humidity means my sugar creations won't harden enough to make them firm! I decided to make the dinosaurs sit instead. I tried to replicate the toy dinos that Eliena gave me and I airbrushed them to the closest I could. I used rice cereal treats for the body of the dinosaurs and the rest are all made of gum paste.

The hardest part of the cake was making the dinos. Once I got them done, the rest of the cake was a smooth journey for me. The volcano was also made of cake and I shaped it to look like a volcano with lava spilling out. I'm quite satisfied with how the cake turned out even though I didn't get the dinosaurs to stand but they still looked alright. At least to me.

The whole view of the cake. The volcano was made of cake and gum paste and airbrushed and hand painted with gold dust to look like molten lava

"Jungle Fever"

Its 2013, a new year and its time again for me to open a new book and reflect if I could achieve in 2013 what I could've done in 2012 but didn't! This maybe because I didn't have the time, courage or just simply didn't bother to follow through in 2012. One thing's for sure, this year, I plan to put more concentration on my son. That means more time for him and less time on cake making. Haziq will be sitting for his UPSR examination and I need to give him all the support he needs.

I admit that I did somewhat neglect him last year because I was too busy making cakes! Well, this year I would have to be more selective on my cake orders and put my son's priorities first. That being said, I still started the 1st weekend of January 2013 with a big cake order. My regular client, Raja Jesrina Tan Sri Raja Arshad commissioned 60 3D cupcakes with the jungle animals theme. Yup, 60 animals to make. She gave me a free reign on the animal design but she gave me a few photos of how the theme of the cupcakes should be. These cupcakes were for her only nephew, Zaeem, who celebrated his 1st birthday on 05th January 2013.

At first, I thought I was not ready to do this. Actually, I was still in a holiday mood and not yet ready to start baking and decorating cakes but I still decided to accept the order. I couldn't say no to Jess as she has been very supportive of my cakes and has ordered quite a few from me last year.

I decided to make 7 types of jungle animal - tiger, elephant, lion, monkey, bear, hippo and snake. That's quite a lot to do as I was alone and my maid was off for a few days. I succeeded and managed to get all the jungle animals done a day before the cake was due.

The animals looked easy to make but the process was actually quite tedious. Am so happy they turned out alright and Jess was very happy with the cupcakes. She SMSed me the next day and told me, "...thanks so much for the cupcakes they looked fantastic!! Everyone loved them v intricate, loved it!!..."

I am very happy to start off the year with a very satisfied customer. Even though I have decided to cut down on my cake orders, I will still update my blog though it won't be as often as before. Let's hope for a better year ahead!

"Last Order for December 2012"

This was the last order I took for the month of December 2012. I was exhausted and wanted to finish off the year resting and spending time with my family. I felt really bad that my husband and I didn't take the kids for a vacation this time around.

The theme of this cake is Rob the Robot. Patricia or fondly known as Pat during my college years had contacted me way back in August to ask about possible designs for her son's 1st birthday cake. She had  gone through a few ideas before she decided on this theme. The concept of the cake is Rob and his friends landing on a party planet. I was asked to actually sketch a design of this cake and run by the ideas with Pat. She wanted me to have all these little details like presents, balloons and mini cakes as part of the deco. Truthfully, I wasn't really looking forward to making this cake. I was afraid that I couldn't meet Pat's expectation as she was so excited and I didn't want to disappoint her. So, I tried my best to create these characters as close as I could to the animated characters on television.

I had the cake made up of two tiers, the top tier resembling a half shaped planet. I even had the mould ordered all the way from UK!!! All in all, the cake was a fun one to make and I was actually quite surprised that I finished it on time with not many hiccups, except for the weather!! That can't be helped!!!

This was how my cake looked like :)

This was the overall view of the cake. The colours are vibrant to suit the theme

TK the robot. Ain't she cute???

Orbit the robot. This one was a challenge to make because of the wheels at his body, but am glad with how it turned out.

The main character, Rob the robot and his bestie, Emma the alien. Not forgeting their pet mouse...
Pat was very happy with the cake! Whew!! She told me that the cake was a favourite with all the kids at the party. This was what she said, " The cake was a hit. Thanks for making it as I imagined it to be and better." You're so very welcome, Pat.

I am very, very happy that my last cake order for year 2012 was a success and I am truly blessed that 2012 was indeed a good year for Pink Ellies Novelty Cakes!

Happy New Year 2013 and let's hope for more interesting cakes for me to tackle in 2013 :)
